Kyungnam University (KU) has been selected as the lead institution for the government’s Next-Generation Physical AI Core Technology Demonstration Project, taking a leading role in advancing AI transformation in Korea’s manufacturing industry. On August 22, the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) under the Ministry of Science and ICT announced the university’s selection for the 2025 project, which focuses on developing industry-specific Physical AI models and verifying manufacturing data using the Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) framework.
KU will oversee a project worth approximately 32 billion KRW, titled “PINN-based Manufacturing Convergence Data Collection and Demonstration Project.” Leveraging its expertise in large-scale manufacturing AI technology and AX (AI transformation), the university aims to drive progress in Korea’s Physical AI development. Yu Namhyun, head of the Gyeongnam Intelligence Innovation Project, emphasized, “AI transformation is essential for regional manufacturing industries to maintain global competitiveness.”
KU was previously selected as the lead university for the Regional Intelligence Innovation Talent Development Project. With this latest selection, the university is expected to strengthen its role as a hub for manufacturing AI transformation, contributing to regional industrial competitiveness and national AI innovation.
