Marcel Proust

Marcel Proust, who authored the novel In Search of Lost Time , is considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. His famous quote is “We should be grateful to those who make us happy. They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom." What does this quote mean to you? Everyone has his or her own criteria for happiness, and responses can vary widely—from career achievements and financial success to family and friends.

However, let’s frame the question a bit differently. Think about the people who make you smile or laugh, even in the midst of mundane routines, brightening your day and bringing joy into your life?

We often overlook the small joys in our day-to-day life. The little moments of happiness embedded in our familiar routines can easily be taken for granted. Whether it’s family, friends, colleagues, a partner, or a pet—or simply the sight of a clear sky, the sound of rain, or wildflowers blooming on the street— these small sources of joy can bring happiness. However, we frequently fail to recognize them. Perhaps it’s because we’re worn out by the demands of daily life and can’t pay attention to such details. On the flip side, by recalling these simple things that once made us happy, we can quickly find ourselves feeling joy again.

If you were a garden, your smile would be the flowers and trees. Those who make us laugh and bring joy to our surroundings are the charming gardeners who help our souls blossom. The reason we can navigate through mundane moments with a sense of enjoyment is often thanks to the skilled gardeners who remain by our side. Therefore, we should be grateful to them, as they nurture our spirits like beautiful flowers. And just as we have been cherished, we should strive to be good gardeners for others as well.
