Rise of a New Paradigm: Agentic AI and the Future of Autonomous Systems
A New Era of AI: Beyond Generative, Toward Autonomous
Artificial intelligence is undergoing a major shift. We are moving beyond generative AI—which creates text or images based on prompts—toward Agentic AI, capable of setting its own goals, planning tasks, and executing them with minimal human input. Unlike generative AI, which depends on direct user commands, Agentic AI can understand broad objectives and act independently. This next stage of AI development will fundamentally change how we work, make decisions, and interact with technology.
At the 2025 Kyunghyang Forum in Seoul, Lim Woo-hyung, Executive Director at LG AI Research, stated that AI’s role is not to replace humans but to empower them—allowing average individuals to perform like experts, and helping experts achieve even more. Agentic AI represents this evolution by handling entire processes, from understanding a task to delivering final results.
How Agentic AI Works
Agentic AI is built on four core capabilities:
1. Goal-Oriented Planning: Understands objectives and organizes tasks in logical sequence.
2. Multi-Step Reasoning: Analyzes complex issues through layered reasoning.
3. Tool Use: Utilizes external digital tools like APIs, web browsers, and code interpreters.
4. Self-Correction and Learning: Detects its own errors and learns from feedback.
These features allow Agentic AI to function as an independent problem-solver, capable of managing entire workflows and making informed decisions without human micromanagement.
Real-World Deployment
Agentic AI is already being implemented in industry. LG AI Research’s model EXAONE (EXpert AI for EveryONE) is used in manufacturing, logistics, and customer service to predict quality, reduce defects, and automate tasks like scheduling and coding. In healthcare, it assists with preliminary diagnoses and consultations, while in customer service, it improves interactions using natural language.
SK AX (AI Transformation) also presented several applications at the Imagine AX 2025 Conference, including:
-Agent Marie: A strategic AI for market price forecasting
-Master: Workflow AI that replicates expert behavior
-A.DotX: A joint platform developed with SK Telecom
SK AX CEO Yoon Poong-young emphasized that amid demographic change and shifting global dynamics, Agentic AI will become a key strategic asset for Korean businesses.
Ethical, Legal, and Societal Challenges
As Agentic AI gains autonomy, complex questions around accountability, ethics, and regulation grow more urgent. If such systems make harmful decisions or generate false or infringing content, it remains unclear who should be held responsible—the developer, the user, or the platform. At the same time, concerns over misinformation, copyright violations, and job displacement are rising, especially as AI begins replacing routine and analytical tasks.
While early implementations like AutoGPT and AgentGPT illustrate the potential of Agentic AI, legal systems and ethical frameworks are struggling to keep pace. Experts warn that without proactive regulation and public discourse, this technological shift could deepen existing inequalities or lead to unintended harm. Ensuring that Agentic AI benefits society at large will require responsible development, cross-sector collaboration, and a clear commitment to transparency and oversight.
Conclusion: A Turning Point for Society
Agentic AI is not just a technical advancement—it’s a shift that transforms how we live and work. For those who are prepared, it brings opportunity; for others, it may pose a threat. Whether this technology becomes a partner in progress or a source of disruption now depends on how our society responds.
