The period of COVID-19 has lasted much longer than expected. During the gloomy and depressed period, in accordance with the government's social distancing policy to prevent the spread of COVID-19, all school events, including festivals, were canceled across the country. Since 2022, three years after the outbreak of COVID-19, the spread has eased, society has become more stable, and social distancing has been greatly relaxed, enabling various school events from this year. Thus, on October 5 of 2022, the Hanma Daedong Festival (HDF) was held to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the school's opening.

HDF lasted over three days. In front of the main building, festival booths were open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a night market took place from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. In addition, food trucks operated from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. in Neoleunmadang, a wide square in front of the main building of KU. On the first day, the central clubs performed on the outdoor stage, and an opening ceremony was held to announce the opening of HDF, starting with an oath presented by Kim Min-gyu, president of the student council ‘Jinsim (a true heart).’ On this day, there was a congratulatory speech from Park Jae Kyu, President of Kyungnam University (KU). He said, "Before we get out of the long circle of the COVID-19 pandemic, I think holding HDF is a part of our efforts to focus our capabilities and do our best to overcome this difficulty, even though uncertainties are rising now and the crisis we face is still ongoing." There were also several performances by various celebrity acts. On the first day, female idol group Billlie stood on stage and performed in front of a large crowd. On the second day, the HanmaMusic Awards Show was held, and several classmates of KU and famous rappers who have been gaining popularity from the public performed: Among them were Superbee and Uneducated kid. On the third day, the e-spots award ceremony was held and the result report of HDF was made, followed by the closing ceremony. On this day, singers Tophyeon, Paul Kim, and Jae-man performed. HDF ended with great success.

As it was the first festival held in three years, students' expectations were high before the start, and during the festival all booths were crowded with people not just from KU, but from outside as well. Especially on the last day, during the celebrity performance, a large crowd gathered to see the finale of the festival, but it was successfully completed without any accident under strict management and control of the organizers and school.

One professor said, “HDF has now become the festival of all, including residents of the community as well as students, professors, and employees of KU.” The taverns of the night market were crowded with people who were spending pleasant time, and all of the people cheered and applauded as one in the concert hall. The seniors of the same department bought delicious food for the juniors they met at the festival, and the students cheered and shouted loudly when their classmates went on stage; therefore, HDF has provided an opportunity for the relationship between seniors and juniors to become much stronger. The students who enjoyed the festival responded, “If you are freshmen, we recommend you actively participate in HDF” and “it was a pity that I did not have enough time to enjoy all the festival booths because of morning classes.” Jo Su-min (20), who came to enjoy HDF from Inje University, said, “It was good to see Paul Kim and Tophyun with my own eyes. The campus is so pretty.” Ji Soon-soo, a Naver blogger, wrote on her blog, “It's been a long time since I've experienced such a festive atmosphere due to COVID-19, so I couldn't get used to it. But it was so nice to have this festive mood after a long time.”

Where there is light, there is also darkness. Although the festival ended successfully, it had created various controversies before it started. First, there was a public opinion criticizing the festival lineup that was spread as a rumor. On the 'Everytime' bulletin board, there were speculations about the lineup for the celebratory performance before the lineup was released, and the students showed a bad reaction to this, hoping for the lineup to be revealed soon. However, as it was not released until two weeks before the festival, the number of posts criticizing the Student Council (SC) increased. The students asked SC to reveal the lineup or issue an apology, and finally began to criticize the president of SC. Fortunately, the lineup was clearly released a week before the festival without any trouble, and a large crowd came to enjoy the performance of the celebrities.

HDF is not confined to KU members. Now it has become an open festival for both insiders and outsiders of KU by strengthening friendships with one another. Other than friendship, it also provides whose who enjoy it with a field to accumulate precious memories as well as offering KU members an opportunity to become consolidated and cooperate.
