Hanma Personality Education: Democracy and Peace Citizenship Education Project

The ‘Hanma (symbol of Kyungnam University) Personality Education: Democracy and Peace Citizenship Education’ project (Hereinafter, Hanminpyeong) is the name of the project provided by the Non-Examination Education Center of KU’s the Education Innovation Center. This project was first operated in the second semester of 2020, and the results of the survey showed that the students' responses were well received. The situation during the initial stage was not so favorable because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the active cooperation of the faculty and staff and the enthusiasm of the participating students, the experience of this project has been substantial. So, during the 2021 academic year, it was continuously selected as a university innovation project for the first and second semesters. As a result, I was able to proceed with the university innovation project, Hanminpyeong, with more enthusiasm. With the start of the first semester of 2021, face-to-face classes were expected, but the first semester was being operated as non-face-to-face lectures as part of the preemptive response efforts of our university authorities to ensure that everyone is fully quarantined. In order for our university students to receive vaccinations against COVID-19, they had no choice but to participate in blended lectures or distance lectures. This situation continued into the second semester, and as the head professor I felt enormous pressure. However, the enthusiasm of the students who worked hard, such as taking special video lectures through e-Class, was higher than ever. During the academic year of 2021, Kyungnam University (a place of democratic history) is able to continue the Hanminpyeong, a university innovation support project that provides mileage scholarships for non-examination to current students, to commemorate the spirit of democracy and the democratic movement that shines through the tradition. Thanks to the participation of the professors and the enthusiasm of the students that contributed to the success of the project, the result was very successful. T h e f i r s t p u r p o s e o f t h e Hanminpyeong is to re-illuminate the activities of Kyungnam University and its alumni, centering on the 3.15 Democratic Uprising and the Buma Democratic Uprising. The second is for young college students to form a positive perception of democratic history. The third is the Hanminpyeong project, which is a specialized education for young college students to substantiate Hanma personality education based on the democratic peace value. Because of these reasons, it is important to systematically study the democratization movement of our region with a focus on Hanma Personality Education. Personally, I believe that the purpose of education is to nurture democratic and peaceful citizens who can cultivate a sense of proper democracy and community. The results of student responses and participation in the Hanminpyeong project conducted in the second half of 2020 and the first and second semesters of 2021 are as follows: 121 students received mileage scholarships for the second semester of 2020; 126 and 138 students, respectively, after the special lectures in April and May of the first semester of 2021, participated in the video lecture; a total of 385 students received scholarships. In addition, the number of students who received non-examination mileage scholarships through video lectures in the second semester of 2021 is as follows: 117 students received the scholarship benefits in the first special lecture and 112 students in the second special lecture. It is also unusual for so many students to participate in a single project year after year and receive scholarships. In the positive index of students for the video lecture, a relatively high positive reaction was shown on a scale of 4.1 to 4.2 on a scale of 5. This was possible because of the passion of the research professors who participated. In doing so, I would like to sincerely express my gratitude to the President of KU, Dr. Park Jae Kyu for his interest and meaningful advice to Hanminpyeong and also for everyone who contributed to the success of the project.
