The Department of Future Automotive Engineering
In 2023, Kyungnam University (KU) was selected as a '2023 Software-Centric University' for the first time in the general track in South Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan regions. Following the designation, the university introduced the Department of Future Automotive Engineering (DFAE) as of 2004. Focusing on hardware, software, and practical skills education through a student-driven 'Smart Education Curriculum.' Collaborations between the department and businesses and research institutions aim to provide students with practical experience and support for employment in various fields after graduation.
Jung Tae-wook, the Chair of DFAE and the Dean of College of Engineering states that the main focus of DFAE is to train professional engineers who have acquired the core convergence technologies needed by future industries such as the paradigm shift of future automobiles and smart factories. He suggests that Convergence technologies in various fields such as electrical/electronic engineering and IT/software are essential for the development of future vehicles characterized by environmental and humanfriendly. Therefore, DFAE intends to foster creative global technical talents by focusing on them.
The Status Quo of International Students at KU
In order to find out the status quo of international students at KU, the interview was conducted with Hong Sun-young, the Dean of the Office of International Services, on January 28, 2024.
Q1. Please share the status quo of the international students for the 2024 first semester.
A. In the spring semester of 2024, there are a total of 550 international students, comprising 50% undergraduates, 35% master's and doctoral candidates, and 12% Korean language learners.
Q2. What strategies does KU employ to attract international students, and could you tell us about any programs designed to attract high-caliber students?
A. We focus on providing excellent education programs, student-friendly infrastructure, comprehensive support services, and so on. These efforts have resulted in a stable and well-managed international student community with low rates of illegal stay and dropout. This has been true since 2017, as confirmed by the International Education Quality Assurance System, conducted by the Ministry of Education. We will do our best to constantly plan and provide customized programs according to the needs of international students. And our university will take the lead in attracting international students and leading global education. Thank you.
